The Merck Manual, first published in 1899, is the world’s best-selling medical book. Originally catering to health care professionals, it was re-edited in 1997 as The Merck Manual of Medical Information – Home Edition, using everyday language and trimming down technical information (like drug dosages). Its third edition was recently published as The Merck Manual Home Health Handbook; along with it, an iPhone/iPod Touch application (developed by Agile Partners) was released.

In a press release entitled “300 Doctors at your Fingertips,” Merck & Co., Inc. touts the launch of a new book and two iPhone apps on Tuesday, October 8, 2009. “Doctors are considered the most trustworthy source of health information, according to a recent survey, yet consumers typically don’t have 24/7 access to their physicians. Recognizing that need, Merck & Co., Inc….released its new medical book, The Merck Manual Home Health Handbook and a new iPhone application (app) The Merck Manual – Home Edition, written by more than 300 key worldwide medical experts.”
