Without much fanfare, MedHand International — the exclusive mobile partner for all new Oxford University Press handbooks, three of which are already in the App Store — released their own version of Harrison’s Manual of Medicine for the iPhone and iPod Touch last November 10, 2009.
What is arguably the world’s leading Internal Medicine reference, the 17th edition of McGraw-Hill’s book has been in the App Store since June 2009, courtesy of Unbound Medicine. Although that app is free, it requires a $59.99 annual subscription before content can be viewed. In August 2009, Skyscape launched its version, as a $59.99 app which included content updates for 12 months.
This week, MedHand officially joined the foray, offering its app at $54.99, a very competitive price point (putting it between the previously-mentioned apps and Amazon’s $50 paperback version).
We here at Medtapp are big fans of apps that don’t require subscriptions, just upfront purchases–like how we bought our textbooks way back in med school. I remember we always kept our tattered hardcover Harrison’s on our desks and the pocket-sized version within easy reach, if not inside our coat pockets. Let’s see if this new version of Harrison’s Manual of Medicine deserves the same spot in our iPhone.
